Report Card: Adolescent Sexual Health
This report, created by the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada (www.sieccan.org), provides an up-to-date national picture of adolescent sexual health in Canada with the purpose of identifying priorities for adolescent sexual health care provision and sexual health education.
Short and long-term trends in Canadian teen pregnancy, abortion, and birth rates as well as trends in teen STI rates are summarized and discussed. Data and trends on Canadian teen sexual and contraceptive/safer sex behaviour are presented.
The report identifies serial monogamy, leading to unprotected sex, as a common behavioural pattern among Canadian youth and young adults. The discontinuation of condom use that often occurs after oral contraception has begun within serially monogamous relationships is a key factor contributing to high rates of STI among Canadian youth and adults.
The report includes an appendix that is designed to help physicians and educators provide relevant information, motivation, and behavioural skills to promote dual protection against unintended pregnancy and STI infection among their patients and students.
