Sexually Transmitted Infections
How Do People Get Infected?
Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are contracted through unprotected oral, anal, or vaginal sex. They can be spread from male to female or vice-versa. Your son or daughter can also catch an STI by kissing or touching an infected area. Or they can be infected if they share needles when using drugs. Some STIs are bacterial and can be cured, while others are viral and stay in their bodies forever. However, they are ALL preventable.
When discussing STIs with your son or daughter, make sure they know that they have the right, and the responsibility, to protect their bodies. If they have any doubts about their health, or the health of their sexual partner, then it is a good idea to protect themselves by by practicing safer sex and/or by avoiding sexual activity that puts them at risk.
