Browsealoud: a speech enabling Web service
Giving a whole new meaning to the term “sextalk”
What is Browsealoud?
Browsealoud is a new feature on sexualityandu that reads out the words on a web site so you don’t have to. The technology highlights each word as it is read, a useful feature for people looking to improve their literacy skills, and for those with visual impairments.
- Download the software (free) from the developer’s website in English or French. Troubleshooting and support is currently only available for the English software.
How does it work?
Once installed, Browsealoud can be turned on or off by pressing the Ctrl key. The voice is fully customizable—adjust the pitch, speed and tone to your preferences.
There are two ways the tool can read out the text on a web site.
- As you move your cursor over the words on a web page they can be spoken aloud.
- If you prefer, activate the continuous option to read out all the text on a page without having to move the cursor to the beginning of each sentence.
Save text as MP3 audio
Easily save content from sexualityandu as an MP3 track so you can listen to it anytime without an internet connection. Simply click and drag your cursor to select the text you want read aloud on sexualityandu, then in the Browsealoud popup menu select “Save as MP3”. Then voila. Fill up your MP3 player, or share the information with your peers.
